Apple performed testing in November 2018 utilizing preproduction iPhone XR units and software in conjunction with preproduction iPhone XR Smart Battery case units and software. The talk time tests were carried out on a Voice over LTE (VoLTE) network.

Internet testing were carried out on LTE and Wi-Fi networks using a dedicated web server, which was used to browse snapshot copies of 20 prominent web pages and receive email once per hour. A 2-hour 23-minute movie purchased from the iTunes Store was used for video testing.

Except for Bluetooth, which was coupled with headphones, Wi-Fi was associated with a network for all but the Internet LTE test, and the Wi-Fi features Ask to Join Networks, Auto-Brightness, and True Tone were disabled.
