  • The cable is not plugged in all the way.
  • The cable was plugged into a power source that has too much voltage.
  • The wire is not properly insulated and has been exposed to water, which shorted it out.

Possible Causes of Damage

A cracked USB cord is one of the most common causes of damage to a USB port. When the cord is bent too much, it can break and cause the wires inside to separate. The wire could also be pinched in a door or other object, which would lead to a break in the wire. Liquid damage is another possible cause for damage to your USB port. The liquid could have spilled on your device and caused it to short circuit or corrode the wires inside. If you are using a device with a touchscreen, liquid can seep into crevices that are difficult to clean out and cause corrosion on the motherboard. .In many cases, when a damaged USB port is located in the same area as the battery, it is possible that liquid damage of some type has caused an electrical short. Sometimes this happens when the device is dropped on its face, or if liquid comes into contact with the battery and shorting out one of the circuit boards inside. Luckily, there are some simple ways to fix your USB cord so that it is good as new.

  1. Cut the damaged cable in half and remove the plastic casing.
  2. Strip about 1 inch of insulation from each wire.
  3. Twist the two wires together and wrap them in electrical tape for extra protection.
